While starting our company, Dobot, my partner and I wanted to make a few print designs that we could use to help promote our style and sell on our online store. This piece was my redesigned movie poster for the classic film, “Planet of the Apes”. I wanted to make a relatively minimal composition and palette, while meshing a classic yet modern feel.

In both preparation and promotion for our ( Steve Trevathan and I ) recently established company, “dobot”, we created this poster design that will be distributed as well as sold in our online store, once it’s set up. It also works as a precursor for what is to come from the company. That being said, we are a design company that works to create the best product possible for people and company who are looking to progress, innovate, or in some way improve/contribute to the world. This image represents the closest thing we have to a mascot; a giant robot character we created aptly named, dobot. In a story we’ve conceived (and will ultimately present to the world via animated storybook series on our site) he is a robot who lands on earth and seems to have been programmed to do one simple task; improve the design of everything in order to make it as efficient as possible - a gross exaggeration of our company’s motto. It’s going to be a ton of fun to create and we think that it will be great for our creative juices and personalities to shine through.

I’ve been designing the homepage, portfolio page, blog and shop of the Dobot website recently because we are revamping it soon, and when I had some free time I decided to tackle the 404 page as well. Since landing on the 404 page is not typically what most people are hoping for, I wanted to make it fun for the user, much like mailchimp.com does with their’s. That is why I decided to go with this simple, cute design, of the applebot character having recently fallen apart. Once this is coded, I hope that the eye will follow the user’s mouse around the screen, just as an added layer of interactivity.

This is a piece I made for an upcoming gallery show based on yakuza film-inspired art show entitled BATTLES WITHOUT HONOR AND HUMANITY after the film of the same name. It will be held at Floating World Comics in Portland, OR! I initially created more action oriented concepts, but after having researched more and reflected deeply on their overall principles, I decided to focus on the more quiet route of the Yakuza’s everyday existence amongst the average community members. The part that intrigued me was the fact they consider themselves more business men than criminals, much like the Mafia crime syndicate.

Also, since it’s hard to see here and I thought it looked cool on its own, I’ve included the three step process I took to make the faded figure in the background. This is also representative of a method in which I’ve been working lately. I will make the initial drawing on bristol paper, but then I will ink various segments of the same image on separate layers of vellum or tracing paper. This allows me to make alterations and adjustments on size or placement while I’m in the digital process. It will also be a necessary portion of a long-term project I’ll be working on at my company dobot, which is a design company that my friend and I have started. You will be seeing this name alongside mine on many future products. Find out more here!

My friend, Steven Trevathan, and I have begun a design partnership/company called “dobot”. We are looking to design for companies that are looking to do good in the world that is based around progression and morality. The site will soon be launching, but in the meantime I’ve been developing some designs and promotional work for dobot, such as these robotic fruits, which I hope to use on t-shirts, buttons, stickers, etc. We will also be using the site as a platform to use our illustrative and design skills for storytelling, beginning with the tale of dobot (a giant robot from space). Stay tuned! We are both very excited for this project.
