Following my previous Umbrella Academy related post, I did yet another character; Spaceboy.
After great apprehension to do so, I broke and ended up buying a jumbo (12”x17”-ish) Moleskine sketchbook. The size is truly fantastic and really allows your hand and arm to move freely about the page without any worry of constraint. In order to get this bad boy started, I chose to do an illustration of The White Violin from Umbrella Academy by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba. If you haven’t done so yet, read that comic now… like, right now.
It took me a while to get around to reading it myself actually. Since it came out in the years of my college education, I didn’t allow myself the opportunity of reading it then, although I’m sure it would’ve helped inspire me and my studies in some way, especially considering it was art school. Looking back on it, I didn’t even have good excuse; even the library next door to my house had a copy. In the end, I bought one for myself to enjoy at my own leisure in the comfort of my own home, and man did I enjoy it. So in short, I recommend everyone give it a chance, or at least check it out several times from your library so that it at least makes you feel guilty for not reading it.
On another note:
I initially acquired this massive sketchbook in order to travel with it, but I had not anticipated its scale to that of my backpack. So I’m not quite sure how transportable it will ultimately be, but I plan on taking it for a spin with me to California this Friday for some good old life drawing exercises. If all goes well, I will return home with a more complete and hopefully intact sketchbook. Otherwise this White Violin sketch might be the one and only drawing attributed to this new sketchbook’s name (Heraldo?) that sees the light of day

While drawing a few Marvel characters I thought that I’d tackle two of my favorite female characters; Sue Richards and Jean Grey. I love their more vintage look and wanted to represent that in a more modern theme.

The anthology—debuting at this year’s Calgary Expo—comes in at 80 pages, and I’m doing a super nice limited printing. All of the shorts are written by me, with art from truly amazing up-and-coming artists. Some of the stories in the anthology have appeared on Challenger; some of them I’m saving for this collection.

Inspired by the recent events in the X-Men and Spider-man universe, I decided to sketch a few of the leading ladies from both. I hope to do a new batch just for fun in during the coming week or so. I’d love to hear what characters anyone wants to see me tackle, so please send in your ideas!

Since doing the triptic group of X-Men character sketches, I decided to do another, but this time of Batman related characters; Batman, Robin, and Batgirl. This was inspired by the most recent New 52 series that DC released last year, which has continued to be stellar. Maybe someday I’ll get to work on Batman, for real :(
Over the past couple of nights I was inspired by the Uncanny X-Force series to sketch some of my favorite X-Men characters; none of which are actually in the X-Force. These were a lot of fun and I would love to do a few more characters, but I’m not entirely sure which ones yet. I’ll probably start with Nightcrawler, but I’m totally open to suggestions if anyone would like to see my rendition of a character from X-Men. Enjoy!

A little guy I’ve titled “Skull Kid”, which I did for fun last night. Feel free to come up with some fan fiction - I’d love to read what sort of stories this character inspires :)
About two weeks ago I did a variant cover design for the Bravest Warriors comic #7. The folks at Comic Alliance put up a preview here http://www.comicsalliance.com/2013/01/09/bravest-warriors-7-cover-art-preview/. I had no idea how much darker my concept was than the others until they were all placed alongside each other, but I guess that’s to be expected from me. Also, I’ve attached the original concept I did as well as the printed one. Originally, Danny was giving the finger to his broken suit and the leaking air, but ultimately had to cut it since the comics are intended for all ages… unlike the show.
Two quick character sketches I did in the past two days just for fun. I usually try to do a sketch at night before going to bed - maybe 15-30 minutes each.
